My first crowdfunding campaign

Yesterday, I launched my first online fundraising campaign using Indiegogo. I have been thinking about this for many months, as a filmmaker and independent artist, the idea of crowdsourcing is appealing. In reality, putting yourself and your project out in cyberspace and asking everyone you know to respond, can best be described as nerve-racking.

Thankfully, I really believe in my project and want to get it made. It all started last year, when suddenly, due to a brilliant campaign in Minnesota and changing national attitudes, it became clear that marriage equality was within reach. I kept hearing from my friends, "I never thought it would happen in my lifetime."

Equality is fantastic, but it doesn't change the past. Many of us have painful histories with the institution of marriage.   Many couples around me were bombarded with the question of, "When are you getting married?" For some, the desire to join the club was strong and without hesitation, for others, it was not so clear-cut.

So that's what I'm doing, I'm interviewing people about relationships, about perceptions of marriage and about what that might look like in the second half of life. Along the way, I'm finding out a lot about commitment, staying power and ultimately hope.

It is a fun project and I can't wait to get back to it, but first I have 30 more days of my indiegogo campaign. I'll be blogging about how it's going here. So please stay tuned.
