Burning bright after a strong opening last summer and fall, Story Club Minneapolis – a storytelling show featuring both an open mic segment and a curated selection of stories from invited performers – is returning with all new performers this winter. The Story Club stage showcases stories like The Moth, but with a more democratic structure – no judges, no scores. Founded in Chicago during 2009, Story Club gained citywide attention and rave reviews from the Chicago Tribune, Time Out Chicago, and WBEZ.org for highlighting first person prose with new and experienced storytellers. Now the stories and entertainment have expanded to Minneapolis, the first Story Club to branch out of Chicago.

Vita.mn says, “Story Club has blended elements of all [the Twin Cities storytelling] groups’ philosophies and created their own unique style.” “Story Club,” writes the Minnesota Daily, “can be a good place for people to test out stories for the first time without fearing judges.” The Twin Cities Daily Planet thinks, “The best part about Story Club was its relaxed atmosphere [...] There was a certain sense of solidarity and support throughout the night.” Founder Dana Norris told the Chicago Tribune“'We think an individual's experience has merit, and by hearing about it, we learn something about the way the world actually is.' And that, she adds, is what makes the stories told onstage by ordinary people 'the opposite of reality TV.'”

Story Club Minneapolis is spearheaded by producer and host Mimi Nguyen – a former Chicagoan, seasoned Story Club regular, and friend of the founder Dana Norris. Set for the last Thursday of each month, June’s show features Nimo Farah, Kate Moore and Wang Ping.  Before and at the beginning of the show, the host will invite audience members to sign up for one of three open mic slots. Each volunteer and featured performer gets eight minutes to tell a first-person narrative. Come and excite your ears!
