Twin Cities stores are flooding with back-to-school specials as September draws near, but over 116,000 children in the metro area will struggle to afford basic school supplies because they live in poverty. Filling a backpack with essentials like notebooks, folders, and pencils can cost around $50, a difficult sum to meet for families struggling to put food on the table. The good news is that school supplies are simple to donate and make a direct impact on a child’s education. This August, help Minnesota students start the school year off prepared to succeed by donating to a Twin Cities school supply drive.
As a general rule, all items must be new. Donations commonly sought include backpacks, No. 2 pencils, pens, rulers, calculators, wide-ruled composition paper, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, folders, crayons, washable markers, colored pencils, construction paper, protractors, glue sticks, scissors, pencil sharpeners, Kleenex, pencil boxes, erasers, and hand sanitizer.
