The words and thoughts of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois and many other Harlem Renaissance visionaries represented the voice of a new generation of African-Americans at the beginning of the 20th century. With Raisin' Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey, singer, dancer and actress Jasmine Guy (A Different World) sheds a light on this critical point in history. The production -- appearing at St. Paul's The O'Shaughnessy -- takes inspiration from the classic 1923 Jean Toomer novel Cane, as well as works by the musicians, artists, poets, and actors of the cultural movement. Backed by the Avery Sharpe Trio's live jazz retrospective of the era, Raisin' Cane fuses together Harlem's influential songs, words, imagery and energy.
